ECB Cricket Young Leaders Award

The aim of this course is to:

  • Raise cricket profile within a Young Leadership role.
  • Inspire Young Leaders to get actively involved with cricket.
  • Help provide additional support for KWIK cricket tournaments.
  • To help develop generic leaderships skills in a cricket context.
  • Identify potential pathways for Young Leaders in cricket.

Target Audience

  • Age 14 - 18 years

This may include:

  • Students at specialist sports colleges and secondary schools to enable them to work with younger age group students.
  • Young people assisting with local cricket activities as a volunteer.

Course Structure

  • 6 hours – this may be delivered as 1 x6, 2x3, 3x2 hours sessions.
  • Can be run as an independent bolt on to Sports Leaders UK Award in Community Sports Leadership and Sports Leaders UK Award in Junior Sports Leadership.

Note: The course consists of practical sessions and short theory sessions that may be run in a safe area of a sports hall / sports pitch.

Overview

The course if made up of the following modules:

Module 1

This module will help the young leader to:

  • Describe the role of an ECB Cricket Young Leader.
  • Differentiate between how-to-coach and what-to-coach skills.
  • Assess and minimise risk when running a coaching session.
  • Build rapport/ relationships.
  • Set up and organise safe activities / practices.
  • Explain the principles of warm-ups and cool downs.
  • Provide instructions and explanations and organise groups.
  • Provide technically correct demonstrations.
  • Reflect on your coaching practice.

What-to-coach skills:

  • Introduction to coaching activities / games.
  • Pass and move.
  • Relay catching.
  • Dodge ball.
  • Close catching / high catching.
  • Overarm throw.
  • Basic batting.
  • Basic bowling.

How-to-coach skills:

  • Provide instructions and explanations.
  • Provide demonstration.
  • Organise.
  • Warm-up and cool-down.
  • Establish and maintain a fun and safe environment.

Module 2

This module will help the young leader to:

  • Introduce modified games.
  • Adapt games to individuals.
  • Set a good learning climate.
  • Identify ways to manage groups with different abilities.
  • Teach and reinforce fair play and positive behaviour.
  • Identify a range of coaching styles to promote learning.
  • Manage behaviour / establish control (setting the climate).
  • Reflect on coaching practice.
  • Encourage and reward positive behaviour.

What-to-coach skills:

  • Modified Games:-
    • Continuous/ non stop cricket.
    • Quick runs and safe catching.
    • Pairs Cricket.

How-to-coach skills:

  • Build rapport / relationships.
  • Keep it safe.
  • Make it fun.
  • Organise.
  • Adapt sessions to individuals.

Get Involved Certificate

Once a candidate has completed 10 hours of voluntary time the individual can choose to fill in the application form (within workbook) and send to Coach Education office at Edgbaston, where upon a their details will be logged onto the Coaches Database and a “Get Involved” special certificate will be issued directly to candidate.
